Driving a Road Legal Buggy in Winter & Wet Weather

Key takeaways

  • Spanish winters bring shorter days and occasional heavy rain, so visibility and braking matter more.
  • Our Zycar Z2 and R2 have a glass windscreen with an electric wiper and LED headlights; the R2's lights switch on automatically.
  • Stopping distances increase on wet roads, so leave a bigger gap and brake earlier.
  • Check tyre condition and pressures regularly: Z2 and R2 run 200 kPa front and 280 kPa rear.
  • Range can be lower in cooler weather and with lights and wipers in use, so allow a margin on longer trips.

Driving a road legal buggy safely in winter comes down to three things: seeing and being seen, braking earlier on wet roads, and planning around shorter days. Winters in much of coastal Spain are mild, but the clocks going back means darker evenings, and autumn and winter storms can bring heavy rain. Here's how to stay safe and comfortable.

These tips are written for our Zycar Z2 and R2, but most apply to any road legal buggy. See our road legal collection.

How do you stay visible in the dark?

  • Use your headlights from dusk, in rain and in poor visibility. The Z2 has high-performance LED headlights and indicators.
  • On the R2, the automatic LED headlights and indicators include daytime running and ambient functions.
  • Keep lights clean: road spray and dust reduce how far your lights reach and how visible you are.
  • Indicate early so drivers behind have time to react, especially as you travel more slowly than most cars.

How do you keep a clear view in rain?

  • Use the wiper: the Z2 and R2 have a glass windscreen with an electric wiper.
  • Check the wiper blade before the rainy season and replace it if it smears.
  • Clean the inside of the windscreen too, as a dirty screen mists and glares more easily.
  • Keep mirrors and the reversing camera lens clean, especially after rain.

How should you brake on wet roads?

Stopping distances are longer on wet roads for any vehicle. The Z2 and R2 have a stated braking distance of 5 m when unloaded; on a wet road, or with passengers, expect to need more. To stay safe:

  • Leave a bigger gap to the vehicle in front.
  • Brake earlier and more gently, especially downhill.
  • Take corners slowly: painted road markings, manhole covers and smooth paving can be slippery when wet.
  • Watch for the first rain after a dry spell, when dust and oil can make roads especially slippery.
  • Avoid deep standing water and flooded roads.

Why do tyres matter more in winter?

Your tyres are your only contact with the road. Check regularly that:

  • there are no cuts, bulges or embedded objects;
  • the tread isn't worn;
  • pressures are correct: the Z2 and R2 run 215/35-12 tyres at 200 kPa front and 280 kPa rear.

Does winter affect range?

It can. Battery range on electric vehicles is often lower in cooler weather, and using lights and the wiper also draws power. The Z2 and R2 have a 60–80 km range from their 48V 105Ah LFP lithium battery, and in mild coastal winters most owners won't notice much difference on short local trips. If you're planning a longer journey, allow a comfortable margin and charge beforehand.

How do you keep warm and dry?

  • Keep a light waterproof jacket in the buggy for unexpected showers.
  • Wipe seats dry before setting off after rain.
  • Wear the 3-point seat belt and make sure passengers do too, every trip.
  • On very wet or stormy days, consider whether the trip can wait.

How should you store the buggy in winter?

  • Park under cover where possible, or use a fitted cover when the buggy is dry.
  • Charge in a dry, well-ventilated place.
  • Wash off mud and road dirt regularly, and rinse after driving near the sea.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive a road legal buggy in the rain?

Yes. The Z2 and R2 have a glass windscreen with an electric wiper and LED lights. Drive more slowly and brake earlier on wet roads.

Do the R2's lights come on automatically?

Yes. The R2 has automatic LED headlights and indicators with daytime running and ambient functions.

What tyre pressures should I use?

For the Z2 and R2, 200 kPa front and 280 kPa rear.

Will my range drop in winter?

It can be a little lower in cooler weather and with lights and wipers in use. Allow a margin on longer trips.
