Road Legal or Utility Golf Buggy: Which Do You Need?
Share
Key takeaways
- If you will drive on public roads at all, even briefly, you need a road legal buggy.
- If you will only use it on a golf course, private estate or private land, a utility buggy is the more affordable choice.
- Our road legal range: Z2 (€11,995), R2 (€13,995) and Z4 (€16,995), with plates and registration included. The Z2 and R2 are EEC road legal, with a 40 km/h top speed and 60–80 km range.
- Our utility range: E2 (€7,995) and E2+2 (€8,495).
- Think about where you will drive in two or three years, not just today.
You need a road legal golf buggy if you plan to drive on public roads at any point, and a utility buggy if you will only ever use it on a golf course, private estate or private land. The difference matters: our utility buggies start at €7,995, while our road legal buggies start at €11,995 and include number plates and registration, completed within 15 days of receiving all the correct information.
This guide helps you work out which type you actually need. Browse the road legal collection or the golf buggies collection, and download full specifications on our spec sheets page.

When do you need a road legal buggy?
Choose road legal if any of these apply to you:
- You want to drive from home to the golf club, shops or beach on public roads.
- Your urbanisation or community has public roads between your home and where you want to go.
- You want the buggy to replace short car journeys. With a 60–80 km range on the Z2 and R2, most local routines are well covered.
- You are not sure yet, but might want to use the roads in future.
When is a utility buggy enough?
A utility buggy is enough if you are confident it will stay off public roads:
- You keep it at the golf course or use it only within the course.
- You have a large private estate, finca or plot and use it entirely on your land.
- It is for a business site with private grounds, such as a hotel, club or venue.
What are the common mistakes to avoid?
- Buying utility to save money, then wanting the road. If there is any chance you will want to drive on public roads, buying road legal from the start avoids disappointment later.
- Forgetting the short stretch of road. Even a few hundred metres of public road between your home and the course counts.
- Choosing seats before use. Decide road legal or utility first, then choose two or four seats.
How do you decide in four questions?
- Will I ever need to drive on a public road? Yes: road legal, go to question 3. No: go to question 2.
- How many people will I usually carry on private land? Two: E2 (€7,995). Up to four: E2+2 (€8,495).
- Road legal: how many seats? Four: Z4 (€16,995). Two: Z2 (€11,995), or the R2 (€13,995) for a 9.7" screen, NFC keyless entry, automatic LED lights and Eco and Sport modes.
- Which colours? 9 body colours and Black or Brown upholstery on every model.
