Moving to Spain? Should a Road Legal Buggy Be on Your List?

Key takeaways

  • A road legal buggy makes sense if your new home is in a town, coastal resort or urbanisation where most trips are short and local.
  • To register a road legal buggy in your name, we need a scanned NIE certificate or TIE, a scanned passport and proof of your Spanish address.
  • We can only register buggies for customers based in Spain, so it helps to have your NIE and address sorted before you order.
  • Registration with Tráfico takes 10–15 days from receiving all the correct information.
  • Road legal prices include IVA, ITV, Tráfico registration and Spanish number plates.

A road legal golf buggy is worth adding to your moving-to-Spain list if your new home is somewhere most journeys are short and local, such as a coastal town, a resort or an urbanisation near shops, beaches and a golf club. The key thing to plan is the paperwork: to register a buggy in your name, you need your NIE or TIE and proof of a Spanish address, so it makes sense to order once those are in place.

This guide covers when a buggy makes sense, what you'll need, and how to time it with your move. Browse our road legal collection.

When does a road legal buggy make sense after a move?

  • You're moving to a town, resort or urbanisation where shops, cafés, the beach and the golf club are a short drive away.
  • You want a second vehicle for local trips while one car handles longer journeys.
  • You're retiring and expect most journeys to be local.
  • Parking is difficult where you're moving to, such as an old town centre or busy seafront.

A buggy is less suitable if you will live in a remote area and rely on fast roads or motorways to reach shops and services.

Which road legal model should you choose?

Model Seats Range / top speed Price
Zycar Z2 2 60–80 km / 40 km/h €11,995
Zycar R2 2 60–80 km / 40 km/h €13,995

All prices include IVA, ITV, Tráfico registration and Spanish number plates. Every model has a 3-year vehicle warranty and a 5-year lithium battery warranty. We are the exclusive Spanish importer of the Zycar Z-Series and R-Series road legal ranges.

What documents do you need to register a buggy?

To register a road legal buggy in your name with Tráfico, we need:

  1. A scanned NIE certificate or TIE card.
  2. A scanned passport: the inside cover and the first page.
  3. Proof of your Spanish address: a complete electricity bill, water bill or property deeds, with the name and address matching your order. For Iberdrola bills, we need all four pages.

Please send proper scans or complete PDFs. Screenshots aren't accepted, because the registration paperwork needs complete, clear documents.

When should you order during a move?

Because registration needs your NIE or TIE and a Spanish address, the smoothest approach is to order once those are in place:

  1. Get your NIE or TIE as part of your move.
  2. Get a utility bill or deeds in your name at your Spanish address.
  3. Message us on WhatsApp to choose your model and colours.
  4. Pay a 50% deposit by bank transfer to secure your buggy.
  5. Once your buggy is built, we send you photos and videos.
  6. Pay the balance and send your documents.
  7. We register it with Tráfico, which takes 10–15 days from receiving all the correct information.
  8. We arrange delivery.

Please note we can only register buggies for customers based in Spain.

What else should you plan?

  • Driving licence: make sure your licence is valid for driving in Spain, as the rules for foreign licences depend on where your licence was issued and on your residency.
  • Insurance: vehicles used on public roads in Spain must have at least compulsory third-party insurance.
  • Charging: check your new home has a dry, ventilated place to charge, such as a garage or covered parking.
  • Community rules: if you're moving to an urbanisation, check any rules on parking and charging in shared areas.
