Your First Week With a Road Legal Buggy: A Checklist
Teilen
Key takeaways
- Before your first drive on public roads, make sure the buggy is insured, and keep your vehicle documents and insurance details to hand.
- Set up a daily charging routine in a dry, ventilated spot so the buggy is ready every morning.
- Spend time learning the controls, mirrors, lights, wiper and reversing camera before you head into traffic.
- Start with short, familiar routes to learn how the buggy handles and how much range you really use.
- Your buggy has a 3-year vehicle warranty and a 5-year lithium battery warranty; keep your purchase paperwork safe.
Your first week with a road legal buggy should cover five things: paperwork, insurance, charging, controls and confidence. Get those right and you will be driving to the shops, the beach and the golf club with no surprises. This checklist is written for owners of our Zycar Z2, R2 and Z4, but most of it applies to any road legal buggy in Spain.
Day 1: Check your paperwork
When you collect a road legal buggy from us, its price has already covered IVA, ITV, Tráfico registration and Spanish number plates. Before you drive:
- Find your vehicle documents, including the registration certificate (permiso de circulación) and the ITV documentation, and keep them somewhere safe and to hand.
- Consider the miDGT app, the official app of Spain's traffic authority (DGT), where you can view information about your vehicles.
- Keep your purchase paperwork, including your invoice, for your warranty: 3 years on the vehicle and 5 years on the lithium battery.
Day 1: Arrange insurance
In Spain, every motor vehicle used on public roads must have at least compulsory third-party insurance. Arrange cover before your first drive on public roads, and keep your policy details with you. Ask your insurer about extra cover such as theft, fire or roadside assistance.
Day 2: Set up your charging routine
- Choose a dry, well-ventilated spot close to a suitable socket, such as a garage or covered parking space.
- Plug in at the end of the day so the buggy is ready each morning.
- Keep the cable tidy and off the ground where people walk.
- Ask us if you have any questions about charging your model.
The Z2 and R2 have a 48V 105Ah LFP lithium battery. LFP batteries don't need topping up with water, which makes daily care simple.
Day 2: Learn the controls
Before heading into traffic, spend 15 minutes sitting in the buggy while parked:
- Adjust the seat position, armrests and headrest.
- Set the mirrors so you can see clearly behind and to both sides.
- Find the headlights, indicators, horn and windscreen wiper.
- Connect your phone to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (Z2 and R2).
- Check the reversing camera view on the screen.
- On the R2, try the NFC keyless entry and the Eco and Sport drive modes.
- Fasten the 3-point safety belt, and make sure passengers do the same.
Days 3–4: Take short practice drives
- Start on quiet, familiar roads close to home.
- Practise braking and corners at low speed to get a feel for the buggy. The Z2 and R2 have a 5 m braking distance when unloaded.
- Practise parking and reversing using the mirrors and camera.
- Try a hill: the Z2 and R2 can climb gradients of up to 15%.
- Remember your top speed: the Z2 and R2 reach 40 km/h, so keep to the right where appropriate and let faster traffic pass safely.
Days 5–7: Learn your real-world range
The Z2 and R2 have a 60–80 km range, but your real figure depends on hills, passengers, load, speed and temperature. In your first week:
- Note how much battery your regular trips use.
- Do a normal day of errands and see how much charge is left.
- Plan longer trips with a comfortable margin until you know your figures.
Every week from now on
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Tyres | Visible damage and pressure. Z2 and R2: 200 kPa front, 280 kPa rear |
| Lights | Headlights, indicators and brake lights working |
| Windscreen and wiper | Clean glass and a working wiper |
| Camera | Clean reversing camera lens |
| Seats and belts | Belts work smoothly and seats are clean |
Don't forget
- Road tax: vehicles registered in Spain pay an annual municipal vehicle tax (IVTM) to the town hall. Check when yours is due.
- ITV: road legal vehicles need periodic ITV inspections. Ask us when your buggy's next ITV is due.
- Problems: if anything doesn't feel right, contact us; we service and repair buggies and supply parts.
